Identity politics is a political approach centered around recognizing and standing up for the distinct identities of marginalized groups. It is both a tool of advocacy and a critique of existing power structures that devalue certain human experiences. In the context of postmodernism, identity politics analyze the collective identities that have been constructed around ideas of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, disability and other defining characteristics. Through this, it creates an inclusive space for people to share their opinions, make demands for change, and ultimately shape the collective consciousness.
